Learning Enviroment

The learning environment I want to create for my students it one that is welcoming and accepting of all.  I want them to take risks in learning and in order to do that they must feel comfortable and respected.  I want my students to become life-long learners who love to read and discuss their opinions on what they have learned.  I want them to have all the tools that they will need to be success as they continue their education.  Since I teach first grade I want to give them the tools they need to be successful readers and thinkers.  Without this strong foundation they will not be as successful as they could be.

The resources I have to create this environment include 3 iPads which each student touches everyday, projector, document camera, 5 student netbooks and a digital video camera.  By using this technology I am modeling appropriate use of these items.  We are taking risks in learning how to work the iPads together and through creating fiction and non-fiction pieces on the iPads.  They see me taking risks and stating that this might not work but we are going to try anyway and if it fails we try to solve the problem and try it again but in a different way.  Using these tools along with our reading and math curriculum my students are exceeding state standards and hopefully becoming life-long digital learners.

Where am I and where do I want to go with technology in first grade?

What are my top 3 elements of a 21st Century Classroom?
1.  Engaged and motivated learners:  I would like my students to love to learn and always want to find out more.  I want to be able to give them the tools they need to use technology to further their knowledge and make them self-learners.

2.  Not afraid to fail:  I would like my students to not be afraid to make mistakes or get the wrong answer.  To feel comfortable enough to take risks in learning.  To try many different processes to get to a solution.

3.  Digital learners:  Since my students all have technology of some sort in their lives I would like to capitalize on this knowledge and get them to use these devices for learning and problem solving.
